What is Therapeutic Exercise?
Therapeutic exercise involves guided, purposeful movements designed to help pets regain strength, stability, and confidence in their mobility. These exercises are carefully selected based on your pet’s diagnosis, physical ability, and recovery goals.
Each session may incorporate a variety of techniques and specialized equipment to safely challenge strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and proprioception (body awareness). Exercises are progressed gradually to build muscle, improve stability, and encourage proper movement patterns while minimizing strain or reinjury.
Therapeutic exercise plays an important role in post-operative recovery, neurologic rehabilitation, weight management, senior mobility support, and athletic conditioning. It is often combined with other rehabilitation modalities such as hydrotherapy, laser therapy, massage, or therapeutic ultrasound as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Therapeutic Exercise May Be Recommended For:

Post-surgical recovery
Therapeutic exercise uses targeted, controlled movements to rebuild strength and restore proper function as tissues heal. This helps prevent compensatory injuries and supports a safe, steady return to normal activity.

Muscle weakness or atrophy
Therapeutic exercise uses progressive, targeted movements to rebuild lost muscle mass and strength. This helps restore stability and function, especially after injury, surgery, or prolonged inactivity.

Arthritis and joint instability
Therapeutic exercise strengthens the muscles surrounding affected joints, improving stability and reducing strain on damaged cartilage. This helps ease pain and supports better long-term joint function.

Neurologic conditions affecting coordination or gait
Therapeutic exercise uses targeted movement patterns to help retrain the nervous system and improve coordination, balance, and gait. This supports pets in relearning proper movement and maximizing functional independence.

Balance deficits
Therapeutic exercise incorporates targeted balance and proprioceptive drills to help retrain stability and body awareness. This reduces fall risk and supports more confident, coordinated movement.

Weight management
Therapeutic exercise combines controlled, low-impact movement with strength-building activities to help pets burn calories and build lean muscle. This supports safe, sustainable weight loss while protecting joints from excess strain.

Athletic conditioning and injury prevention
Therapeutic exercise builds strength, endurance, and flexibility through targeted, controlled movements tailored to a pet's activity level. This helps optimize performance while reducing the risk of future injury.
Because every patient progresses differently, treatment plans are continually reassessed and adjusted to support safe, steady improvement in function and comfort.
What Pet Parents Should Know
Each therapeutic exercise plan is tailored to your pet’s diagnosis, age, and recovery goals, and it’s adjusted as they improve. Progress takes time, so consistency matters more than intensity.
Your involvement makes a big difference. Your therapist may teach you exercises to continue at home and will make sure you feel confident doing them.
Sessions should feel positive, never painful. Mild tiredness is normal, but contact your team if you notice limping, swelling, or discomfort. Follow activity restrictions closely, since doing too much too soon can set recovery back. Rugs on slippery floors and ramps can also help prevent falls at home.
